Somewhere over the Rainbow…
There are waves of course!
Island folk love the winter time…we are blessed with huge surf on the north shore of Maui. Check out the recent storm, rainbow and all. We don’t take our women surf camps and co-ed surf camps here, but just look at what we have to look forward too!

A while back my friend Brian started the Maui Activities Club here in Maui, to get people together who liked to do similar activities. The club organizes hikes, plays beach volleyball, and surfs. They also have a huge list of other fun things to do here in Maui.

Here are some of the photos from their recent surf activity a few weeks ago. If you are interested in joining the group for some fun activities contact Brian. I think they have plans to go explore Maui on 4wheelers next, sounds fun.

Thanks Brian for putting this together. If you don’t live on Maui, you can still join the group when you come to Hawaii to visit. Just send Brian an e-mail.

Futures Fins.

In: Surf Tips

Here’s a quick tip regarding the center fin on your long board. Depending on your riding sytle, longboard shape, and performance goals, your fin might be more important than you might think.

I recently had some one ask me why my fin was so odd looking? Well, It had more to do with how I wanted my board to ride than the look of the fin. The fin I was using on my longboard is known as a cut away. This lets me have a large fin to stabalize my board, for those great long noserides, but cuts the bottom of the fin away so that I still have a board that turns easy. Of the 4 fins featured below, the black fin is the cutaway.

Many people might just jump on the idea that this fin sound good for all conditions, but it works great for small to medium size waves, and ok for larger waves. The reason is that as a wave gets bigger the fin might be a little to loose and cause the board to be unstable at higher speeds. Thats when it’s time to put on a performance fin. A fin with a longer base, like the red one below.

Experiment with fins and see what works best for your surf break and riding style. A fin can drastically change the way your board rides, so have fun and play around with fin choices.

The fins featured are from futures fins. I use them on all my boards. They make some great shapes and their shortboard fins are amazing. Check them out at Futresfins.com
